Butter Slime Recipe

This slime is similar to our foolproof beginner slime – it's squishy and fluffy but not slippery or more runny in texture like our rainbow slime. It's almost like a stretchy elastic play dough – thick and it gives a bit of resistance when you squish it. You can also shape it, which is unique for slime, or use cookie cutters to make slime shapes!

My daughter found butter slime on Youtube and to be honest, the version we tried from there was not my favorite only because it's a single use slime. However, we adapted it to make this re-usable stretchy, squishy butter slime. I actually found that it lasted longer than our usual slimes!

What kind of clay do you use for butter slime? While there are a few people who are adamant you need to use Model Magic clay for butter slime, I actually liked the texture (and repeat use) of using a regular modelling clay. The model magic butter slime was fluffier and had a thick texture with awesome resistance, while the modelling clay butter slime was smoother and while thick it could be squished a lot more.

My favorite thing about this slime is that it tends to stay together – it's not drippy or messy in the slightest.

Since it doesn't drip or stick to surfaces, it's a great first time slime for beginners.

And my second favorite thing about this butter slime is that it only uses a couple tablespoons of each ingredient – not an entire bottle of glue like most other slime recipes. This is a great way to use up ingredients if you have an almost empty container of glue lying around, or some modelling clay that is going to go to waste.

What is super cool is if you find scented modelling clay or add some flavor extract to this slime. It makes a great addition to kitchen play and it doesn't stick to everything! Make it yellow for butter slime, brown for peanut butter slime, white for mashed potatoes, etc etc.

We all really enjoyed the texture – it gives a lot more resistance than play dough or regular slime so it would be great for kids who love to squish things or need to relieve some tension. However, it isn't as easy as play dough to form into shapes – so for some kids that may be frustrating so just encourage stretching and squishing if that's the case.

Ingredients for Butter Slime

White glue
Shaving cream
Baking soda
Contact solution <– this is the brand we use, it must contain boric acid to work as a slime activator
Modelling clay <– can use model magic or regular polymer modelling clay, depending on the results you want
Food dye, optional

Tip: You can use a borax solution instead of contact solution – or liquid starch. For the borax solution, dissolve 1/2 Tablespoon of borax in 1/2 cup hot water.

How to Make Butter Slime

Combine the glue and shaving cream until completely combined – being careful not to overmix.

Add the baking soda, stir well, and then add the contact solution.

Stir the slime until it forms a cohesive ball.

Pick it up and knead it a bit, then add food coloring if using.

Knead the modelling clay into the slime mixture until fully combined.

Your butter slime should be stretchy and a consistent texture.
